Aflateen Social & Financial Literacy

The Aflateen programme is part of a larger movement — the Aflatoun programme. Together Aflateen reach children and youth, ages 6-14 and 15-18, to provide social and financial education. The programme was first introduced in 2011 and designed to inspire and empower youth to lead responsible lives and to become agents of change.

Social and financial education is aimed at helping young people think critically and learn about rights and responsibilities, as well as gain financial knowledge and skills that will enable them to make the best use of resources. It also helps them reflect and make sense of the transitions they are going through and how they can best be engaged in the world. Social education teaches them responsible citizenship — needing to know about and being involved in social issues that affect them — while financial education teaches children the important skills of saving, budgeting and engaging in enterprises.

Aflatoun provides children with the building blocks of life, encouraging them to save their resources and start social and financial microenterprises. Through Social & Financial Education, children and youth are empowered to make a positive change in their lives and in their communities and eventually break the cycle of poverty in which many find themselves.

In 2015, PINTAR has collaborated with Asia Foundation for ‘AFLATEEN’ Programme for Batch 1 whereby it involved 10 PINTAR Schools from Selangor, Johor, Pahang, Negeri Sembilan and Pulau Pinang.

For Batch 2, another 15 PINTAR schools will be participating in this programme. The schools are from the states of Johor, Selangor, Pulau Pinang, Kedah, Kelantan, Pahang and Perlis.

At the end of the programme, students will be able to:

  • Examine and reflect on their identities, values and beliefs, as well as their relationships with family, friends and communities;
  • Critique and investigate how rights are realised or violated in society;
  • Describe and practice responsible use and accumulation of financial, natural and other kinds of resources (people, planet and profit);
  • Demonstrate the ability to conduct planning and budgeting activities towards realising a desired goal;
  • Conduct enterprises which have a positive effect in their communities.
