As McDermott nears 50 years of operations in Malaysia, the company remains committed to creating positive impact beyond its project execution. Whether supporting education in local communities or contributing to critical healthcare needs, McDermott’s corporate social responsibility efforts reflect a belief that meaningful progress is built through both long-term investment and immediate action.
Recent initiatives in Kuala Lumpur and Kota Kinabalu, Sabah demonstrate how employees are working together to support communities in ways that address both present and future needs.
Coming Together to Make Every Drop Count
Employees in Kuala Lumpur recently united around a cause with a more immediate impact: helping replenish Malaysia’s blood supply.
Hosted at McDermott’s Kuala Lumpur office in partnership with local healthcare partners, the blood donation drive brought employees together with a shared purpose of supporting patients and families in need. The event highlighted how a simple act can have life-changing consequences for individuals facing medical emergencies, undergoing treatment, or requiring ongoing care.
Beyond the donations collected, the initiative demonstrated the generosity and community spirit of McDermott employees, many of whom volunteered their time and participated for the first time. The event served as a reminder that meaningful community engagement does not always require large-scale programs. Sometimes, the greatest impact comes from individuals choosing to contribute in small but significant ways.
Investing in Future Generations Through STEM Education
While in Kota Kinabalu, where McDermott is executing the Block H project for PTTEP, the company partnered with the U.S. Embassy, MySTEM Institute, and the Pintar Foundation to deliver a STEM education program aimed at inspiring students through hands-on learning and innovation. The initiative formed part of the U.S. Embassy’s Freedom 250 celebrations and brought together educators, community organizations, and industry professionals to create meaningful learning opportunities for students in Kota Kinabalu.
Designed to make science, technology, engineering, and mathematics more accessible and engaging, the program introduced students to practical applications of engineering, technology, and data analysis through interactive workshops and collaborative activities. By connecting classroom concepts to real-world challenges, students gained exposure to skills that will become increasingly important in the workforce of the future.
To help extend the impact beyond the event, McDermott donated laptops and educational sensor devices to local schools, including SM La Salle Kota Kinabalu and SM Lok Yuk Kota Kinabalu. These resources will support digital learning and provide students with opportunities to explore scientific concepts through hands-on experimentation and data collection.
The initiative reflects McDermott’s broader commitment to workforce development, education, and creating opportunities for future generations in the communities where it operates. It also reinforces the importance of collaboration among industry, educators, nonprofit organizations, and government partners in preparing students for tomorrow’s challenges.
One Commitment, Different Paths to Impact
Although the initiatives addressed different needs, both were rooted in the same principle: strengthening communities through action.
Whether supporting the healthcare system through lifesaving blood donations or helping students discover a passion for science and engineering, McDermott continues to demonstrate that corporate responsibility is most meaningful when it responds to the needs of the communities around us, creating lasting value.
